Bald Eagle and True Fire Theme

Surface: Harley Davidson Electra Glide Fairing

Paints Used: Automotive base coat/clear coat

Instruments: Double action airbushes, both gravity and siphon feed. Touch-up gun, spray gun, acetate masks.

Duration: I didn't keep track but I would guess 6 hours airbrushing, half-hour clear coating, one hour buffing and polishing.

Cost: $900.00, fairing provided by customer.

The first thing I do is spray the eagle's head with a yellowish/white mixture that I mix myself. I start loosely, filling in a large area and then tightening up the design as I go along. At this point I want to define the direction of the feathers, as well as the eyes and beak.

Once I am satisfied with the overall composition I start adding color where neccesary. While I have some yellow paint mixed, I decide to get right into the background and start laying out the foundation for the fire. Even though I am using hand held masks at this time I still try to keep it loose.

At this point I've only used to colors. The yellowish/white mixture for the eagle'e face and yellow for the fire's foundation. I wanted to use orange but since I already had the yellow mixed I went ahead and shot a light coat of red kandy to give the illusion of orange.

I mix some more paint for the tight details that are to come. I use a mixture of red and black for the shadows and another yellowish/white mixture for the highlights. The highlights in the beak and in the eyes were created with the same color you see in the background.

I'm a bit dissatisfied with the eyes so I rework them more to my liking. I also begin to better define the direction of the feathers and add more highlights to the eyes and beak.

I start working ont eh fire again. This time I go a little heavier with the red kandy.

The paint dries quickly and I am able to immediately begin another layer of flames. This time a bit tighter and more defined. I also start blending the licks into the lower feathers of the eagle's head.

Here is a shot of the other side. I'm satisfied with the balance.

I shoot a nice, wet coat of leoow kandy over the yellow base. Now it's starting to come alive.

I use my yellowish/white mixture and add some hot spots.

I shoot another coat of kandy yellow because I don't want the highlights to dominate the composition.

The finished product.

Up-close and personal.
